News about Google’s Algorithms
Barry has noted more weekend volatility in the SERPs as per the last 4-5 weeks. Once again we did not identify any algorithmic changes across our client’s sites. There were a number of sites that saw volatility across the week, but no correlations that would suggest there was a deliberate change made to the ranking systems. In our opinion, these weekly periods of increased volatility are most likely due to more adaptive systems adjusting to the needs/intent of searchers.

Errors in Search Console Rich Results status reports
As of October 6th, Google is adding more details to some errors on Search Console Rich Results status reports. It’s supposedly going to make understanding and solving the issues easier. David Waisberg tells us which specific errors we might see this additional information for:
The new errors that can appear in some SD types. If you have them you'll get more details in the UI:

2. Invalid attribute enum value
3. Invalid object

Google AMP links not working in new iOS
Google confirmed an AMP bug where URLs were not working in search. To be specific, this bug makes it so that if you’ve upgraded any of your devices to the new iOS 15, and click on a link in search, you won’t be taken to the AMP URL even if there is one. Not to worry though because this would likely have a minor impact. Also, on October 6th, Google’s own Danny Sullivan said this issue should be resolved shortly anyways.
Issues with GSC’s “Crawled, not indexed” report
A number of sites are seeing a lot of pages that are indexed appearing in the “Crawled – currently not indexed” section of Search Console. This seems to have been an issue since the end of September so keep this in mind as you’re looking into your crawled – currently not indexed data. Google’s Daniel Waisberg says he is looking into it!
We're looking into it…

Local SEO - Google SERP Changes
Full width GMB local pack
A lot of changes have been spotted in the local SERPs lately, including a full width local pack. This could be just a Google test, but we’ll keep an eye on it. So far the sentiment seems to be that it takes up too much space. We’ll keep the old version thanks.

What is this sorcery? A 5-pack?
We’re not sure if this is a test, glitch or new feature, but 5-packs have been spotted in the SERPs. We’re keen to see how long this lasts and what it may mean for listings.
This is a game changer. Or a test. Or both. It depends. https://t.co/xQwVV1kLsD

With the example provided, Glenn makes an important point about the retirement of rel=prev and rel=next. As frustrating as Google’s somewhat lackadaisical announcement about it may have been, if your site uses pagination and you noticed no effect on your search traffic despite rel=prev/rel=next being retired as an indexing signal for (seemingly) years before the official clarification from Google, their systems were likely handling it just fine on their own.
