Search News You Can Use Episode 268 - HCU and LSU *still* rolling out. How Google will possibly respond to ChatGPT - Light Version
Bing may add ChatGPT to search as early as March. Will Google?
Here we go.
"Microsoft is preparing to launch a version of its Bing search engine that uses the artificial intelligence behind ChatGPT to answer some search queries rather than just showing a list of links."
— Dr. Marie Haynes🐼 (@Marie_Haynes) January 4, 2023
In the paid version I’ve shared my thoughts on what I believe Google’s response will be.
The helpful content and link spam updates are still rolling out
So much for “may take up to two weeks to complete. These updates are going to be so challenging to analyze.
Yes, they're still ongoing.
— John Mueller is mostly not here 🐀 (@JohnMu) January 3, 2023
In the premium version we discuss
- What defines the start and finish of an update (I did not know this!)
- What I am seeing in my data in regards to the link spam and helpful content updates
- Advice to help you determine if you’ve been hit or if it’s a seasonal change
I expect that the end of this update is going to cause a lot of change. Otherwise, why would Google delay it? Stay tuned as I am sure to be analyzing both of these updates extensively.
Not sure if you were impacted by recent updates?
I am still taking sites to use to test my new tool on. You can submit your site. Once my traffic drop assessment tool is ready I’ll send you a link to your report. The report should tell you which updates possibly hit you, how to dig deeper to understand more, and what my general advice for recovery is.
Google has updated its advice on article structured data. There’s no more character limit for headlines

From Google’s documentation:
Discussed in the premium version
This week’s premium version is a BIG one. I’ve spent hours writing the most helpful stuff I can on the following:
- My thoughts on what Google’s response to ChatGPT will be. Think ChatGPT plus the power of MUM and E-E-A-T. It’s going to be radically different!
- How to determine if you’ve been hit by the helpful content or link spam updates.
- Discussion on a Google patent that might explain the helpful content system.
- Discussion on a Google patent that gives us clues on E-E-A-T.
- Should you nofollow links to social profiles?
- A huge Shopify announcement for e-Comm.
- A great video to help you understand more about AI.
- A dumbed down (for me!) explanation of graph neural networks – and why Google’s shopping graph is mind blowing.
- How AI chat is already revolutionizing health care.
- Great ChatGPT uses for SEO
Marie's news / Podcast
As much as I absolutely love writing, recording, editing and producing my podcast I need to put it on hold for a little bit. I promise it will be back.
At the beginning of the pandemic, I recall a day where I was about to record podcast and did not know how I was going to do it. There were so many difficult things happening in the world and in my own life as well. Yet somehow I forced myself through. I discovered that podcast is so good for me. When you can pour all of your effort into creating something, especially when that something helps people, it invigorates you. I made a promise to myself that no matter how bad I was feeling, I would record a podcast episode every two weeks.
And then ChatGPT came along and I got working on my traffic drop assessment tool again. I realize that it is pretty much a certainty that this is going to get finished! I need to focus on this tool for the next few weeks.
I’ve decided to put podcast on hold for a bit while I complete my traffic drop assessment tool. It’s so close to being done and it is going to help so many people!
Thank you so much for listening to podcast. You are going to really love what I have planned for podcast when it resumes!
The latest on my traffic drop assessment tool
I’m spending time each day improving the accuracy of the tool and it’s ability to recognize a traffic loss as correlating with a Google update as I would if I was analyzing the data myself. This week I added the ability for me to quickly add a new update once I’ve analyzed it and determined its impact.
I’ve got quite a few things to do to get it user friendly, but I’m so thrilled that it is actually working.
How you can be involved:
Submit a site here. I’ll use it to test the tool. Once the tool is ready for testing, I’ll send you a link so you can get your report. The report will tell you which Google updates may have hit your site and what my general recommendations for recovery are.
I’ve had several of you reach out offering to beta test or to help me with the coding and development. Thank you! At some point I will have a developer help me. For now (this might be dumb) I’m really enjoying the challenge of doing this myself along with the help of ChatGPT. We’ll see what happens when it comes to beta testing time.
Helpful for Local Businesses
Is it ok to respond to old reviews? Darren says it’s a great idea!
Q: I have started responding to Google reviews. How far back should I go?
A: As far as you can!
When you respond, Google notifies the customer, which could trigger new business with them.
— Darren Shaw (@DarrenShaw_) January 3, 2023
Darren also shares that while it against Google’s TOS to incentivize reviews, it’s not against the rules to incentivize employees for getting new reviews!
Local SEO Tip: While you can’t incentivize customers to leave a review, you CAN incentivize your employees.

There is still no resolution to the issue where it looks like Google Search Console is not tracking clicks from the local pack:
