Search has changed!

A LOT has changed in how Google ranks sites. After years of intensive study and testing, I believe that much (perhaps most!) of what we traditionally have done in the name of SEO matters very little in today’s AI driven systems. Here’s how Search works today:

  • Traditional SEO factors like links, keywords and a good technical foundation get you into the auction considered for ranking.
  • AI systems like RankBrain, RankEmbed BERT and DeepRank use a complicated mix of factors to rerank those results. They work to predict which pages a searcher is likely to find helpful.
  • Most importantly, those AI systems are trained and then further fine-tuned by two things: The ratings of the quality raters and the actions of searchers in Google’s live tests.

Why work with Marie?

I’ve been intensely studying Google’s search algorithms since 2008. I’ve worked with hundreds of websites, ranging from tiny sites to some of the most well known brands on the web. By 2017, my site quality reviews were in such high demand that I hired a team. We grew to 12 people – doing site reviews full time, often with a months’ long waiting list.

In 2022, Google’s Danny Sullivan reached out to ask if we could talk about a new change to Google’s algorithms that would radically change how rankings work. This ended up becoming the “Helpful Content System” – a shift from valuing traditional ranking signals to using AI to predict which websites a searcher will find helpful and demote those that simply looked good because of SEO. Eventually Google took what they learned from this system and implemented their understanding of the signals contributing to helpfulness and user satisfaction into their core ranking systems. After this conversation, I retired my agency and spent the next several years intensely studying machine learning and AI. I realized that this was vitally important if I wanted to accurately and effectively consult with business owners on doing well in Google’s Search ecosystem.

After two years of intensive study, I published my book, SEO in the Gemini Era which goes into great detail on the AI systems that drive Google’s rankings today. If you want to learn a subject well, write a book! In 2024, I opened up my consulting options again and started working on a monthly basis with a small handful of incredible clients. Together we have been implementing strategies to perform well in Search, including its AI driven components. And now we are preparing for agentic search which is truly a whole new ballgame!

Here is the most important thing I can tell you: Today’s Search is radically different from the Google algorithms we learned to optimize for. AI systems determine which pages to show searchers. While the systems are incredibly complicated, it really comes down to two things:

  • Provide substantially more value than anyone else when it comes to meeting the needs of the Searcher.

My current price for site quality reviews is $3000 USD paid via credit card, Stripe or ACH transfer. For this price I will review 2-3 pages/keywords and give a large number of suggestions for improvement. When you apply for a site quality review I will share a few options with you. I do not offer payment plans at this time.

Some interesting history on my pricing for site reviews

My very first reports were simple checks to tell you whether you had been impacted by Panda or Penguin. I charged $89 for these and had so much business I kept putting up the price. As my knowledge, experience and results improved, this price continued to increase to the point where my team and I were often charging 5 figures for reviews and still unable to keep up with the demand.

This demand slowed along with Google’s push to use more AI in their ranking decisions. My clients were looking for SEO advice like improving E-E-A-T, technical improvements, and link building ideas. Yet, I could see that Google’s systems were rewarding things that could not be easily “SEO’d”. For many sites impacted strongly by Google updates, I felt that no amount of traditional SEO would make them the most satisfying results for searchers. The same holds true today. If you want to do better in Search, you need to truly stand out among the sea of competitors who are vying for the attention of your audience.

As mentioned earlier, I took time off to study and learn more about these AI systems, the retraining of the systems and how the feedback loop of quality rater scores plus live experiments monitoring user signals influenced them.

I started offering some brainstorming calls sporadically in 2025 and have been pleasantly surprised to see that my advice was not only being well received, but also helping sites see fantastic improvements.

 

FAQs about my site reviews

Fulfilment depends on demand. I complete these reviews in the order they come in to me. When you submit your request for a review, I’ll share my waiting list length with you. Expect anywhere from 2 weeks to a few months. If my waiting list is long, I do sometimes offer expedited service for an additional fee.

As my waiting list grows, I will incrementally increase the price of my reviews. I’ll update this page you are on now if I increase the price. But if you book now, you’ll be locked in at this price.

While many of the sites that work with me improve, I cannot guarantee improvement. This is especially true for sites that have been strongly impacted by Google updates. Sometimes Google’s ranking systems change in ways that cannot be gamed. For example, if the systems are preferring to rank businesses with a brick and mortar presence, no amount of SEO or quality improvements will help.  For some sites, if AI Overviews are providing people with the answers they are seeking, it may be difficult to capture back the traffic you used to have. It’s not impossible to see improvements if your sole focus is Search, but I have found that I have the most success when helping a business that has a presence that extends beyond Search. 

If you have been strongly impacted by Google updates, I may decline your request for a review.

Most of my recommendations will be geared towards doing better at understand the intent of your searchers and meeting that intent well. I might suggest changes to the layout of your pages. I will likely make suggestions to help you brainstorm on creating content that truly is original compared to your competitors. There is a good chance I will talk about using AI to help you with your improve your content creation (but not replace humans completely.) I likely will share information with you on how vector Search works and some tips on optimizing for it. However, sometimes this can do more harm than good. If we look good to machines but not humans, we’re teaching Google’s systems to downplay their predictions of whether our site should rank well.

Most of our focus will be on understanding what the needs of your searchers are and coming up with ideas for being the most satisfying option for them.

I use AI to help me throughout the process of analyzing your site. However, the majority of the analysis comes straight from my brain. If I use AI, I will use my Workspace Gemini account (or my Business ChatGPT account) which means that information I share with the LLMs is not used for training on your business data.

I will extensively use tools that I have created with the help of AI to help me dissect your GSC and GA4 data.

I may give you some AI generated ideas for improving. These will come from agents I have created that are trained on my advice. I do hope to eventually offer access to these agents to clients.

Along with your video and documents on Search, you will receive an AI generated summary of my findings plus recommendations mentioned in the video.

You will receive my latest advice when it comes to AI agents, Agentic features of Search and what I see coming in the future for your industry. This is mostly hand written by me, but I do use Gemini Deep Research, Google’s AI Mode and sometimes other AI resources to help me when it comes to understanding more about what is happening for businesses like yours.

At this time, I do not offer bespoke consulting. I am focusing on doing site quality reviews.
