News about Google’s Algorithms
The September Core update is live!
Four months after the last core update, we have a new one. I’ve seen a little bit of chatter about this update in the SEO community, but it does not seem massive to me at this point. Still, it can take a while before the full effects are seen and it is still rolling out.
The Semrush sensor spiked on September 13, the day following the rollout, but now seems down to normal levels.

The update is global:

Olaf Kopp pointed out that while the update was global, it had varying impact in different countries.
Interesting to see how different is the impact of the current core update per country. First day it was USA, second day Italy Spain and Japan. In other countries it is quiet till now … #google pic.twitter.com/w9QVlb9N1N

If you are impacted by this update and make improvements, you will likely need to wait until the next core update to see significant changes in rankings.
It's here in their blog post on core updates:https://t.co/TGClk82L7D
This has been our experience as well. Improvements can help somewhat, but full recovery of rankings doesn't tend to happen without
a) major changes in content quality / EAT
b) another core update happening pic.twitter.com/CKFN4dm61m— Marie Haynes (@Marie_Haynes) September 12, 2022
We’ve seen some nice tweets of people sharing data showing possible increases related to this update:

Nice increases for this client. (Alternative medicine information site – Google organic traffic)
That big increase before the core update is bot traffic. pic.twitter.com/g7Pb3ttPVP

As @glenngabe shared, here are additional examples of movement for health review sites that I've checked. Some are decent sites, some not. One includes a site hit hard with the latest PRU too. It's early, and more will change in the coming days. pic.twitter.com/HJ20bS6SKM

The latest on the helpful content update
We’re seeing more reports of sites being hit by the helpful content update.
this is ours. the drop in June is because of an issue with tag manager. we have weathered many updates but HCU has impacted us big time. the drop is around 50% pic.twitter.com/4OeEc5IN6a
— Syed Aftab Hussain Hashmi (@islamian2547) September 8, 2022
And more and more sites are starting to feel the impact of the HCU, which appears to have ramped up in the last few days.
These sites are more in line with what I expected Google to go after – I'm showing the domains so you can come to your own conclusions about the content 😅 pic.twitter.com/BIrNaP4vu5
— Lily Ray 😏 (@lilyraynyc) September 9, 2022
Is the helpful content update related to ad experience?
It’s about the stuff we said to consider in the post, so it’s best folks look back to that.
— Danny Sullivan (@dannysullivan) September 8, 2022
(None of the helpful content update questions have to do with ads.)
How are the helpful content update and core update connected?
In the midst of the helpful content update rollout, Danny Sullivan told us that future updates (core and product review) might make the HCU look more impactful.
Maybe the helpful content signal alone wasn't enough to tip the scales and produce a change in someone's particular situation, but when we do other updates (core, product reviews), it might add into that and be more significant….
— Danny Sullivan (@dannysullivan) September 6, 2022
Glenn Gabe asked whether the September core update is using the HCU classifier as a signal. It sounds like it’s not exactly working like that, but rather, the weight of the HCU signal plus the weight of signals analyzed for the core update may add up to cause further damage to sites affected.
Not that directly. Point is our ranking systems use a variety of signals overall, as we said: https://t.co/G6g7hvE7P2
Helpful content is weighted, so sites on the edge might not see issues. But if they also have core update issues, the combo might be more significant. pic.twitter.com/tQZcsZQHkp

MHC Announcements
I want to thank all of you who booked a Zoom call with me to discuss your sites in the last few weeks. I thoroughly enjoyed these conversations! I’ve closed my bookings for now as I’ve booked client work that will be keeping me busy for a while. Eventually though, I’d like to do more of these. I’m considering doing some group calls where we brainstorm on improving content together. If you’re interested, please do let me know.
Recently articles I’ve written:
We updated our article on the Helpful Content update with everything we know so far. I also wrote my thoughts on why this update will cause confusion for months or years to come.
I’m currently working on a new book/course to help site owners improve content. Thank you to everyone who has purchased my QRG book!

New Https report in GSC
New on Google Search Console 📢 HTTPS report ⛓️ Find more information regarding the HTTPS status of your site and make it easier to understand which pages are not served over HTTPS, and why not. Learn more https://t.co/0Pq9MI4ZCG pic.twitter.com/hDZgeF5E5J
— Google Search Central (@googlesearchc) September 14, 2022
With this report, when Google finds a url on our site that is not able to be served over https, they’ll tell you which one it is, and why.
Big news for people selling products!
We're announcing more ways merchants can take part in shopping experiences in Google Search:
– Expanded eligibility for merchant listing experiences
– More structured data properties
– New Search Console reportinghttps://t.co/jGMPYlQOaZ— Google Search Central (@googlesearchc) September 13, 2022
This gives us even more reason to use structured data. Doing so can get you merchant listings in the SERPS even without a Merchant Center account. Structured data can now make you eligible to appear in new SERP features such as “Popular products”.
What’s even more exciting is that there is new reporting in GSC – a Merchant listings report and a Product snippets report.
Feeds are definitely *not* going away. More merchant control over when updates occur, better handling of product variants, … but the new support is great when feeds not an option, or to improve accuracy of web page extraction if Google verifies page contents with feed.

SEO Tips
Mordy made changes to content and got it indexed
Great tips here!
I don’t know if it’s me or if it’s something happening more often these days in general, but I’ve seen more & more of my pages on the SEO Rant site being crawled but not indexed.
So I made some changes. Lo & behold the pages are now indexed
Here’s what I found fixed my issues pic.twitter.com/RjvjEkvz6G

Word count is not what makes a page thin
Word count is not a sign that a page is thin content. You're the expert on your site's topic (or you should be), you can make a qualified call on what's helpful for users, and what's fluff. Don't use word count. https://t.co/lnuYObPiY6

Local SEO
Possible significant local update September 7, 2022
Seeing directions icons on Google Maps for service area businesses (SABs) that shouldn't have them – and they don't work. Maybe this is related to all the insane fluctuations we're seeing for SABs. Something is broken… pic.twitter.com/iJq66XGTV4
— Joy Hawkins (@JoyanneHawkins) September 14, 2022
The Local Search Forum has a good discussion on this possible update. Business owners are reporting dropping out of local maps listings while organic rankings remain the same.
By the way, it’s been a while since we mentioned how awesome the Local Search Forum is. We don’t do much in terms of local SEO at MHC, so if you have questions, this is definitely the place to get them answered!
